Porcelain veneers have transformed the smiles of countless patients into beautiful new states. While these remarkable cosmetic devices are specially designed to replicate the texture and shape of natural tooth structure, you may be curious about what wearing them actually feels like. Here’s a brief guide to what you can expect to experience during the veneer placement process as well as how you can expect them to feel in your mouth.

What Does Receiving Veneers Feel Like?

Placing porcelain veneers requires a specialized process that is typically completed over two appointments several weeks apart. The first procedure begins with your dentist administering a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort, and you also receive a sedation treatment to help you stay still and calm if necessary. Once you are ready, they will then remove a small amount of enamel from the treated teeth, take bite impressions, and place temporary veneers so you can get used to wearing them. This process will be painless.

What Do Temporary Veneers Feel Like?

Your temporary veneers will slightly alter the shapes of your teeth, so it may take a little while for you to get used to your smile’s new dimensions. They will feel increasingly natural as you adjust to speaking and eating with them, and you’ll come back to your dentist’s office to have them removed and receive your permanent veneers after a skilled technician carefully crafts them.

What Do Permanent Veneers Feel Like?

After your dentist removes your temporary veneers, cements your permanent ones in place, and makes any final adjustments, you’ll be ready to show your beautiful new smile off to the world. Your new porcelain veneers should be incredibly lifelike in shape and appearance, but you may notice a slight difference in texture from your natural teeth when you run your tongue along the ridges of your smile. Otherwise, they should feel perfectly normal once you get used to them.

Porcelain veneers can be an excellent way to achieve your ideal smile. Consulting with your dentist can help you find out if this treatment can be right for you.
